The  Keyboard Music of Albertus Bryne

The Bryne Interactive Edition is an innovative solution to the problems inherent in the printed presentation of musical editions.

The edition has been devised by Heather Windram and Terence Charlston and applies the principles of electronic publishing to the critical editing of early keyboard music.

The complete keyboard music of Albertus Bryne is here published for the first time and in both CD-ROM and traditional printed form.

The CD-ROM provides access to the complete source materials in facsimile, literal transcriptions of each source in modern notation and a final edited version identical to that in the printed, paper edition. Additionally, a recording of each transcription performed by Terence Charlston has been linked to the appropriate images.

The edition will provide invaluable insight to performers and scholars of 17th century keyboard music and to all interested in the editing, performance practice and interactive publishing of early music.

The edition consists of 30 pieces—six suites and seven individual pieces for harpsichord and one organ piece.

Albertus Bryne was one of the earliest English composers to group his keyboard dance music into suites of the same key and the musical style of these pieces had a considerable influence on the next generation of composers, especially Locke, Blow and Purcell.

Bryne lived through the troubled years of the English Civil War and was organist of both St. Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey. He died in 1668.

The edition will also include an audio-CD of Bryne’s keyboard music performed by Terence Charlston on harpsichord, spinet and organ  recorded by Deux-Elles Classical Recordings.

The edition is to be published by Norsk Musikforlag A/S and will be available in 2007.

Why an Interactive Edition?

The Bryne Interactive Edition presents in visual and aural form all the source material used to produce this edition of Albertus Bryne’s surviving keyboard music. It has certain advantages over the traditional musical edition presented in book form only. Firstly, it enables the user to examine every stage of the editorial process and make their own decisions about how the sources should be interpreted. This can be done through several media. The entire Bryne Interactive Edition can be accessed via a computer using the CD-ROM to display and navigate between the sources, transcriptions and musical edition. The final musical edition, concordances, performance suggestions and information and a précised version of the preface have been printed in book form to facilitate performance.  An interpretation of the Performing Edition is included as an Audio-CD.

Structure of the Bryne Interactive Edition

1. CD-ROM.
The interactive CD-ROM consists of facsimiles of all sources, transcripts of all sources into modern notation, sound files of each transcript, the final edition in modern notation and critical commentary. The final edition, preface and index are all linked by interactive web pages.

2. The Performing Edition in Book form.
The final edition, critical commentary and an abridged preface is also issued in book form for ease of use at a keyboard instrument.

3. Audio-CD of Performing Edition.
An additional Audio-CD contains a performance of the Performing Edition on harpsichord, spinet and organ.

The structure of the edition can be represented diagrammatically.

This model is based on the actual process of making an edition: from source materials through diplomatic transcriptions to the final edited text and its performance. The final edition, here designated the Performing Edition, to distinguish it from the Source Facsimiles and Source Transcripts, is the editor’s interpretation of the source information presented in modern notation.  The Interactive Edition makes the sources of Bryne’s keyboard music available as images and sound. The Critical Commentary is linked to the Performing Edition so the user can navigate between both. By making the source material available and keeping the editorial intervention minimal and transparent, the user can trace how the final Performing Edition has been arrived at and make their own edition. The Bryne Interactive Edition includes an interpretation of the Performance Edition on Audio-CD.
